Our Firm: Sustainability

Going Green

At Brown Rudnick we recognize that climate change and resource depletion are among the most challenging global issues facing businesses, cities, towns and individuals.  We believe responding to this challenge demands immediate, sustained and focused action.

Global institutions, and small businesses alike, are leading the fight against climate change by launching programs to encourage environmentally friendly business practices.  Brown Rudnick is a signatory of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s (“MBA”) Lawyers Eco-Challenge.

Launched in January 2008, the Lawyers Eco-Challenge is a collaborative initiative between the MBA and the Conservation Law Foundation encouraging the legal community to conserve energy and resources.

By signing the Lawyers Eco-Challenge, we have pledged to help combat climate change through greener business operations and the reduction of our carbon footprint.  To the extent possible, we apply the MBA’s recommended green practices to all of our offices.

Our internal initiatives include encouraging the use of email over paper, setting our printers to duplex, selecting Energy Star appliances and deploying video conferencing technologies to reduce travel.  We give preference to vendors who embrace industry sustainability guidelines.  Throughout our recent multi-office construction projects we have purchased furniture from sustainable vendors, installed smart lighting control technology and repurposed or donated a great deal of office furniture.  Please see the section Internal Initiatives for a more comprehensive list.

We continue to review our operations worldwide to identify and to act upon opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint.

Client Capabilities

Brown Rudnick has been focused on sustainability issues for more than ten years, when the Firm established its Renewable Energy Group.  This team of lawyers and government relations professionals assists clients with matters related to renewable energy project development and finance, emissions reduction schemes and alternative energy sources.  Extending our activity in this field, we launched our Cleantech Team to address the full spectrum of legal issues and business opportunities in the emerging clean technology sector.
